The Winner takes it all ....
I have heard the quote "A Winner does not have special power he is just brave for a extra minute...". Yesterday i happened to see it for myself - Wimbledon 2008 Finals in flushing meadows. The stage was set for the final match between the cool headed Roger Federer and the young gun Rafaeal Nadal.
Federer being the crowd favourite and King of the grass court had one thing in mind to beat the Bjorn Borg record of five consecutive Wimbledon titles. But Rafa had similar thing on his mind too.He wanted wreck this very ambition of Fed-ex to become the the first tennis player since Bjorn Borg 28 years ago to hold the French Open and Wimbledon titles simultaneously.
Nadal and Fedex played so well, so strongly and so spectacularly that both of them were showered with thunderous applauses for their dramatic comebacks.Initially Nadal looked strong beating Fedex 4-6 4-6 in the first two sets. After that the entertainment was cut short with the rain gods making merry over the flushing meadows. Once the match was started again,Fedex regained his momentum not to forget he was a man with a mission here,he changed the course of the match beating Nadal in the next two sets making the score card look like :
4-6 4-6 7-6 7-6
Leaving the audience/spectators guessing who might finally take over this much coveted prize. Then the tough battle resumed with FedEx making the scorecard look like 7-6. Nadal undeterred levelled the scores 7-7 in no time.He soon cut short Fed's momentum breaking at 8-7 though the latter was serving big aces totalling 26 aces in the whole match.Fedex committing an unforced error led Nadal the way for his championship point. Nadal making no mistake scored a point this time around, making him the The Winner of Wimbledon 2008 and
the first man after Bjorn Borg hold the French Open and Wimbledon titles simultaneously crashing Fedex dreams of breaking the Bjorn Borg's consecutive 5 Wimbledon titles. The match lasted almost for 4 hours 48 minutes making it the first longest final match played in the Wimbledon history .
The final score looked 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7 for the spaniard Nadal making him the only man from Spain to lift The Wimbledon after Manuel Santana in 1966.Three Cheers for Nadal who showed us what it takes to be a Winner and appreciated Fedex's humbleness by quoting "Fedex attitude always is positive when he lose, when he win. Always accept the victories and the losses with the same humble ".Nadal also spared a thought for Federer, whose defeat brought to an end a 65-match winning streak on grass. "I must congratulate Roger," he added. "He's still the No1, he's still the best, and he's won five times here. But now I have one, and that's very important to me."
Federer addressed the crowd saying "I tried everything,But Rafa's a deserving champion, he's the worst opponent on the best court. It's a pity I couldn't win it and promised the fans and crowd that he'll be back next year."
Cheers to this tennis legends....
